An insight into the Webinar on Schools and Rights of Students/Employees with Disabilities

Divyang Legal conducted its first Webinar, based upon the Rights of Persons With Disabilities (“RPWD”)  Act, 2016 on the 27thof June, 2020.  Divyang Legal is immensely thankful to all the Principals, Teachers, Counselors, Parents and even Students, from across the country, who took the time out from their busy schedules to attend this webinar.

The team expresses their heartfelt gratitude to all for making this webinar a success. This is only one of the many steps towards building the vision on which Divyang Legal was built – EQUALITY.INCLUSIVITY.ACCESSIBILITY.

The webinar primarily aimed to educate and create awareness about the statutory duties of Schools, under the RPWD Act, 2016 for creating a barrier free and inclusive environment

The webinar was organized by Mr. Aryan Mehta and Ms. Diksha Bhasin, our research trainees and moderated by Ms. Khushboo Sharma, IP Associate at RSB LegaL. The webinar commenced  with a few words by Gaurav Sharma, Ph.D mentor and guide for Divyang Legal. This was followed by an enriching session by our key note speaker for the evening Mr. Narendra Sathe, Advocate and Founder of Divyang Legal, who first discussed the relevant provisions from the Constitution of India and the Right to Free and Compulsory Education Act dealing with school education for disabled persons. After dealing with various historical movements that have occurred, at international & national level for recognizing and establishing the RPWD Act, Mr. Sathe succinctly touched upon the legal rights of Persons with Disabilities as well the statutory compliance of Schools in light of the RPWD Act, 2016.

Mr. Sathe also touched upon certain concessions available to the students with disabilities during examinations which included the provision of scribe, extra time etc. The webinar was summarized with a brief explanation of some landmark judgements. Certain risks that could be incurred by schools for being non compliant along with the benefits which schools in turn could avail by complying with the RPWD Act, 2016 were also discussed.

A brief Q & A round was conducted post Mr. Sathe’s session wherein the participants had an open floor to not only put forth questions but also share their experiences with the speakers. Divyang Legal is delighted to have received multiple valuable suggestions/feedbacks from the participants post the webinar and hopes to present yet another educative and insightful session soon!
